Cellphone/Smartphone shit oi.

Postby Livestock » Thu Sep 01, 2011 10:55 pm

Oh hi broes.

I'm buying a Garmin Asus A50 ( i.e. http://www.garminasus.com/en_AU/phones/nuvifone-a50/ )
Because essentially what I want is a fully functional GPS that texts, calls and plays MP3s.

How do I know if that shit works on NZ networks?? Do I just have to chuck a m'fukkin 2 deg sim in there and start callin my soldiers on the corners?

Whats all this fuckin lock/jailbreak bullshit nigguhs rantin bout?

I'll email Garmin to start with.. but thought you cunce might have an idea.

Shot Ace..

I'll add you to the list of people on Punkas I owe dinner too..

xox
Jeff

P.S. Fuck iphones.

I'm sure redswitch will have a mate/relative/mate of relative/relative of mate who is an authority on GPS's... but in my humble opinion, qualified only by my experience of 5 or so years in the map retail industry and a short stint in consumer electronics, Garmin is the best GPS company. If this phone is anything like their other products it will be a ma-ah fuckin tough phone.

I have an iPhone though... So as far as opinions on phones go... You probably don't want mine.

If you're ordering it from overseas you don't want it tied to an overseas provider. Not sure how it all works but that's why some might be jailbroken. Best option is to source one that was bought from a to provider that doesn't lock their phones. If you want to be real sure check with garmin.

You'll want a micro sd card for that phone also... And a 2 degrees data plan, which is about as useful as tits on a bull if you live anywhere outside of Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.

Thanks pal, Yeah I'm pretty switched on GPS wise.. been using various Garmin products for years now.
Do it for a job etc etc..
The GPS60CSX I been using for years are tough as hell/waterproof and the receiver is second to none.
Garmins new GPS78 is shit though.
I'll just get in touch with Garmin/Asus that'll be the best way to go about it probably.. just want it to be as simple as chukkin a sim in and Robert's your cousin's dad.

N.B. might have to switch back to stinkin vodafone.

Fixed it for you.

Jeff that phone is sweet as. Thought about getting one myself, but think I'll stick with the combo of 60CSx when I actually need a gps, and shitty samsung "smart" phone when I don't (but the novelty is worthwhile). Garmins standard maps are better than other manufacturers, but the nz opengps group or whatever they call themselves now seem to be better at keeping things up to date. Googlemaps is way more useful than most proprietry maps too, especially if you want to find a feed/cheap motel or whatever. You could probably just build your own maps though eh? Bit of a laugh.

Yeah the 78's are pretty balls, designed for boaties, upgrade from the 72 which was a real p.o.s. The new 62 series units are dece though, replacing the 60 series. Will get a 62st when the 60CSx dies, so probably never... think we are getting some 62 series units here at uni soon though.

As for the phone, dunno if it will be locked with optus or not, possibly not though. But yeah best bet would be to hit up gamin and/or optus and then ebay if necessary.
I think it's lint.

GPS62sc or stc is the way to go. Awesome receivers, with a 5mp camera as well. I normally require Geotagged photos for landcover classification etc.. so to have that built in to the GPS and not have to produce a geotag using software afterwards is a bonus.
Gonna buy an A50 as soon as I get the remainder of the required funding.

applications like Jeff's were/are a big driver of camera/gps integration and implementation of geotagging. Not people who beat off over holiday destinations on flickr.

Want! Perfect phone for me. Rugged smart phone. First thing I'd do would be root it and get rid of anything motorola though. Motoblur YUK!
