For sharing, bragging, whining and commiserating.

I'll start it off with some pictures. Cause it's the holidays I've had a few days to get things going.

Wow what an awesome looking garden! I've been inspired recently to get stuck into gardening again - got a small plot at home with some veg and fruit trees and a plot at a community garden.
Our plants just lost some morning sun at home though, a 4 storey block of flats has just gone up next to our vegie garden :(

that's an impressive looking garden in those pics up there, a fair bit of work! inspired me to go take a few...

the seeds that are still to pop up and seedlings waiting for the last chance of frost in a few weeks, and the view out the sunroom to the garden.
Image

our raspberry doing it's thing, got babies popping up around it now.
Image

the fire bath i made just behind the trellis the raspberry is growing up, gets used pretty regularly.
Image

broccoli yet to head at the back, rhubarb in the middle and early silverbeet at the front and lettuce too under the bottles.
Image

mound of the winters compost under the straw ready for pumpkins and the strawberry bed in front of that with a bunch of contained mint in amongst it
Image

my garden helpers spreading compost and picking out seeds in the bed for the eggplants and chillies that i'm going to build a small glasshouse over
Image

a small sample of the parsley plants out the front of the house with the sign that greets anyone coming to the front door, fucking jehovah's witnesses think it doesn't apply to them though

Nice action shots of the lovely ladies Akaxo :D

We just attempted to pen the chooks in at ours to prevent them trashing everything we are planting. It hasn't worked so far, and we haven't figured out where they are getting out. Strawberries scratched up every evening when I get home!!

haha good luck with that, i just fenced off the garden and let the girls have free run of every where else cause it seemed easier, not as motivated to get over it if they have shit loads of other areas to wreck. mind you i've also gone outside a fair few times to find them perched on top of the fence but they've got the idea now and have been no problem.

that sign took me hours to make, burnt the letters in with a shitty soldering iron but it's made a difference to the number of random sales people knocking on the door so well worth it.

and love the fire bath, something really nice about soaking under the stars or in the rain. and being in a bath that gets hotter rather than colder the longer you are in it.

auckland must be a few weeks ahead of us garden wise going by the other pics, a lot of our stuff isn't going in till after labour wknd to avoid any chance of frosts. pics of most of the garden aren't too impressive at the moment, just straw mulch everywhere. herb garden is only just starting to come back after winter but already using fresh herbs from it, fresh oregano on the pizzas last night.

have also had some disappointment with seeds not germinating, may have to start a whole lot again bugger it.

not egg bound as such but have had a problem with soft shelled eggs rupturing before getting laid. one had that happen and had to get the yolk etc syringed out of her and have a series of antibiotics in case an infection set in. the guy we got our first ones from mentioned them getting egg bound and having to break the egg inside them and clean it out? never had to do that thankfully but it's just one of those things that happens from what i gather. three in a week is a bit odd though. whenever i have any questions about chickens i go here http://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/index.php it's a very active forum and has a lot of info and a shit load of helpful people, queries tend to be answered in a matter of minutes. just don't swear or talk about politics cause you'll get banned just like that haha.

yep going to gbh for sure and i can yarn about chooks for hours haha so yeah sounds good

took some more pics today because i'm fucking around at home doing bugger all today...

think we'll be having the first salad out of the garden tonight
Image

broccoli has started to form it's heads, hoping it hurries the fuck up, need the space
Image

basil plants in and another lot of lettuces
Image

not too much to look at but got rows of yams and spuds under all the straw over the wknd. the black barrel of liquid manure should be on the white stand to the left of it but fell off in the earthquake and far too heavy to lift back up.
Image

weeds getting turned into fresh eggs, got five of them this morning from six laying birds :D
Image

another one of the helpers, warming up the potting mix for some seedlings
Image

and a pic of diedre looking all fucked off because the cat is too close to the eggs she's trying to hatch. not really garden related but she's looking pretty punk rock so fuck it

Mint garden action above guys - Hey, here's a question - does anyone have a lemon tree with lemons on it? I need a bag full if anyone close to the city wants to sell some off.

it didn't, that's the link to the whole album.

stick in the html code for each pic, this:

Code: Select all

and you get this:

any helpful advice on turning an unused standard red-lidded wheely bin into a compost bin?

just leave as is and chuck stuff in or cut the bottom off and place directly on ground?
