Re: 'Vegan' Fake Meat

Do supermarkets stock vital wheat gluten? Cant say ive seen it before, but keen to make some Seitan. Yeah, regular supermarkets have Healtheries brand in 500g boxes. If you're in Auckland though on Dominion Rd is a bulk food store (called Bulk Food Savings, behind the Wendys) that sells it for abou...

Re: Good non-dairy substitute for cream?

If you don't want the flavour of coconut cream, you can get soy cream but it's harder to find. SAFE shop has some, probably on their online shop, and some health food stores have it too.

Re: vegecafe (fortunes)

Got steamboat there tonight and the waitress screwed up the gas cooker thing for it and made huge flames which started fires on stuff on the table that took a few minutes to put out. Yikes. The service there now is pretty crap compared to how it was, fire aside, and it wasn't even that busy.

Re: Being served the wrong food

Once I ordered a vege battered dog from Burgerie and they gave me a meat battered dog. It was just after they'd changed vege dog suppliers, so I didn't really know straight away that it wasn't just realistic faux super processed meat. Gross. They are normally really good so I think they just must ha...

Last Christmas New World supermarkets sold a gingerbread house kit which was vegan. The kit had the gingerbread already shaped, you had to make a sugar paste to stick it together then whatever decoration you wanted.

Taiwanese style fried pork, fried won tons, bbq pork fried rice, and the hot sour soup is great and only $4.50 or something. Also one of the generic beef with plain rice ones. I haven't tried any of the more expensive menu yet.

Anyone tried any of their steamboat stuff?

Hey guys. I know Vegan is the buzzword and all but food miles may be worth thinking about I suspect. I think your suspicion might be wrong. On average the energy that goes into transporting food to our supermarkets is a small percentage of the total that goes into producing the food. Here is an article which...

I haven't seen the ingredients lists - but i 'spose they're as vegan as any fragrance company since the main reason ingredients on perfume aren't listed is because they contain lab built sythethic molecules. Also, I do agree there is probably some truth in the argument. Easy access to porn might stop some people from raping people, which is good. But it wouldn't/doesn't stop all people, and the argument doesn't disprove the social constructionist argument like phaedrus and others have assumed, because t...

I was never interested in proving that. It would just be depressing to try do that on punkas, and I'm not neccessarily convinced myself. I think the biological arguments for rape are possibly equally convincing (but it's been ages since I've read these so I might have changed my mind). Again, I only...

Okay phaedrus, by 'article' I meant 'argument presented by the article'. Read social constructionist theory if you're interested in arguing about it. I'm not. I was just pointing out that it's not knee-jerk 'porn makes rape' since you misrepresented it that way. Most workers probably are exploited. ...

Phaedrus, the porn gets rid of rape thing isn't really any newer than the idea porn causes rape. or more valid... i just posted it cause it was nice to see a feminist blog/news item that didn't just have the same knee-jerk reactions to this issue. You cant do a study on unreported rapes, because they are unreported. Its like saying "40% of people are abused as children, but only ___% report it". Pretty ridiculous. Aidan No, you just haven't ever read anything about it. People do say things like that, the statistic given is about 10...
