Re: lol! leet ha)(0rs leak guvermint secrets to teh interweb

Cablegate is a farce.

Wikileaks won't win this, and I'm pretty sure their agenda will inadvertently do more harm to press and internet freedom than they expected.

Re: lol! leet ha)(0rs leak guvermint secrets to teh interweb

Worth a read. Taking Stock of WikiLeaks December 14, 2010 By George Friedman Julian Assange has declared that geopolitics will be separated into pre-“Cablegate” and post-“Cablegate” eras. That was a bold claim. However, given the intense interest that the leaks produced, it is a claim that ought to ...

Re: pigs use stabbing incident to encourage police state.

Yeah okay I mostly agree with that. The thing is, every time this happens, we get a bunch of people who want the police armed so that criminals can be 'dealt with' fronting up against a bunch of people who think that any expansion of police resourcing is a step towards some sort of police state. And...

Re: pigs use stabbing incident to encourage police state.

this section of the article akoxo posted addresses some of those questions The arguments in favour, as far as I can see, are ones of equality and deterrence. That is, 'give the cops a fighting chance' and 'if the bad guys know the good guys are armed, they won't do bad in the first place'. The latt...

Re: lol! leet ha)(0rs leak guvermint secrets to teh interweb

Anyone else starting to wonder how badly the whole wikileaks disclosure culture could backfire? The winner is Big Business, the loser is you. Back to the trucking analogy. If the government can't control the cargo or the trucks, it will try to control the roads. Since it can't, it will get private s...

Re: pigs use stabbing incident to encourage police state.

If cops had guns (the police spokesman had a hard on for the idea on 3 news) then the douchebags will get guns too. Instead of being hacked up a bit and being in hospital, he would have been shot in the head and be at the morgue. /obvious After 3 minutes of watching COPS I think it is safe to say t...

Re: 'Modern' Justice wants more of you in prison.

I'd support an independent office for prosecution, but in a country where we have a national police force, which is essentially a government entity, the difference between police prosecution and independent prosecution may really only be superficial.

Re: 'Modern' Justice wants more of you in prison.

Well I'm just saying.. Cos when you refer to a 100% conviction rate it sounds like a terrible thing. But is it? Would not a properly functioning justice system, where the authorities only charged people they knew were demonstrably guilty, always have a 100% conviction rate? Now I'm not saying that t...

I am anti significant changes to laws, made without public consultation, that the legal society and the law commission both have major issues with. Not all the time, so, it doesn't suck. yeah a lot of countries have pretty shoddy judicial systems without juries too  there's nothing wrong with changes being made to legislation per se, even to the bill of rights. but when the changes could diminish rather than uphold citizen's rights i'd have problems with it. and i suspect tha...

When someone is raped, or when an accused attempts to use some weird defence, I note that you guys are quite often in favour of the inquisitorial system which lessens or removes the role of the jury.

And yet when it is proposed that the bar for a jury trial be raised, you have a problem?

The problem is that it is already normalized.
