Re: Corona Virus

Thanks for the duolingo site, I've done a day of Japanese.... I already knew how to count to 10 from my martial arts days but learning the writing is going to be difficult. Basically they have 3 writing systems, hiragana for common native words, katakana for foreign words and kanji which are borrowe...

Why are the independent grocers and farmer's markets closed? Surely food is an essential service? Used to enjoy buying my veges from the grumpy old cunt who runs my local market.

Re: Corona Virus

China was much best politically equipped with this than we were. They didn't have to worry about any of this human rights stuff, they just came down hard. Well, I guess we're going to get a taste of what it's like to live in Wutan. Glad it's Jacinda anyway. Enjoy your 1 month under fascism, kids.

Re: What´s for eats?

I actually had to look up rollmop, not something a typical kiwi eats at 3 am while pissed out of his/her tree (horrible steak and pepper pie from the servo is a more typical part of kiwi and aussie cuisine). We don't normally pickle our fish, but the euros have carried on with their preserving tradi...

Jeanette Fitzsimons is one of the few truly honest MP's we've ever had. She knew that "the economy" as understood by mainstream economists is incompatible with responsible use of the earth's resources. I was sorry when she left parliament. Now the Greens have been taken over by blue-green ...

Re: Things that really grind my gears....

Billy Joel himself was a bit embarrassed about "Piano Man", he said the melody was boring and the lyrics were basically limericks. He's right. Now Paul is a real estate novelist Who never had time for a wife And he's talkin' with Davy, Who's still in the Navy And probably will be for life ...

Re: Things that really grind my gears....

Billy Joel's Piano Man... what a lyrical disaster. The drink is called "gin and tonic", not "tonic and gin". "When I wore a younger man's clothes"... who says that shit? "I'm sure that I could be a movie star if I could get out of this place" - ditto. And what...

I stayed at a cabin in the Fagaras mountains in Romania where the owners kept goats and provided goat soup and milk. Nearest shop was about 6 hours walk away so they had to be self sufficient. Their son was competent in English.

NoFx for their humour and Bad Religion for their smart lyrics are acceptable pop punk bands. Saw the Buzzcocks about 3 or 4 times in the UK and each time I was disappointed. I guess their heart wasn't really in it.

And yeah I'll defend Abba. They are no longer considered camp/kitsch/ironic/whatever. Just well crafted pop music.

Baby baby baby baby ohhhhh... baby.

Fun fact - the original title of that song was "Groupie", and the original lyric was "I can hardly wait to sleep with you again" rather than "I can hardly wait to be with you again". And Karen had such a goodie two shoes image....

Leeks are awesome. Not really part of the traditional kiwi meat and 3 veg with potatoes, carrots and peas/cabbage/cauli/whatever but honestly one of the best veges you can eat. Get over the anti-Welsh prejudice.

got the brogue pinpricks... they were kind of like cross trainers, the idea was to let the water out while wading through the bogs in scotland. These days they're just decoration, but for some reason you still see them in business shoes. Haven't worn doc marten type boots in ages.

Finally got hard boiled eggs down. Steaming is better than boiling as with most things. 12 minutes otherwise they go green and tasteless. put them in cold water for 5 minutes afterwards. Crack them in the middle and peal with the flat of your thumb.
